The awards recognise the professional excellence of individuals in the construction process, rather than the project or completed structure, and were handed out at a function in Auckland on Friday 26th August 2017.

Supreme performer

The supreme award went to Rodney Verhoeven, a project manager with Hawkins Construction Ltd, for his role in managing the Walter Nash Centre in Taita, Lower Hutt, a sports facility & community hub combining the Walter Nash Stadium, Taita Community Hall & Community Library and Hutt Valley netball courts in a single integrated facility.
The judges said Mr Verhoeven, who holds a national certificate in carpentry, demonstrated exceptional leadership & passion for the project: “He overcame initial hostility towards the project by engaging the community and allowing them the opportunity to design & integrate artwork on precast panels. Rodney also provided view slots so locals could watch the project progress, and installed a platform so a photographer could take progress photos for the client’s website.”

NZIOB judges can’t separate top young achievers
The NZ Institute of Building’s judges couldn’t split the top 2 young achievers in this year’s GIB-sponsored awards and handed the prize to both finalists, both from Christchurch – Annalise Johns, a project engineer with Fulton Hogan, and Glenn Jowett, AECOM’s BIM practice lead.

The young achievers

Ms Johns’ most recent construction achievement was her contribution to the delivery of the Christchurch Art Gallery base isolation external works. The judges said her achievements had had a strong positive impact on young women in the company & wider industry, demonstrating the unique skills that women offer in construction & the built environment.

She holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with first class honours from Canterbury University, and has also had a secondment to the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT), where she worked with the senior management team as innovations co-ordinator and in one of the design teams as a graduate structural engineer.

Mr Jowett, who leads AECOM’s building information modelling (BIM) practice nationally, works with clients to implement improved project & asset information management solutions & processes. He has become one of the leading figures within the New Zealand & Australian BIM communities, was a key contributor to the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment-supported NZ BIM Handbook, and regularly writes articles and speaks at seminars in relation to BIM.

He completed an apprenticeship in structural drafting in the UK, supported by 2 years’ part-time study at Leeds College of Building, where he achieved a double award Edexcel level 3 national certificate in civil engineering. Since moving to New Zealand, he’s spoken at various conferences & seminars in Australia & New Zealand in relation to BIM.

Te Oro project Manager Supreme at Building Awards, Cousins Named Young Achiever & innovator

The site manager for an Auckland Council community facility came out on top at the NZ Institute of Building awards on Friday night, while 2 cousins were named young achiever and innovation award winner.

The Supreme Award went to Garyth Jones Hawkins Construction Ltd), project site manager for Te Oro Youth Music & Arts Centre in Glen Innes. Cousins Matt & Sean McGuinness, both employed by Wellington family company LT McGuinness Ltd, have done a lot of their work on developments by Willis Bond & Co Ltd, headed by one of their uncles, Mark McGuinness.

The Clyde Quay Wharf apartments project on Wellington’s former Overseas Passenger Terminal claimed the Supreme title at the Property Council’s national awards in June.

Sean McGuinness won the innovation award for managing the construction of the Clyde Quay under-wharf carpark, which involved casting big concrete slabs above high tide level then, once cured, lowering them into position using synchronised hydraulic jacks.

Matt McGuinness, named young achiever of the year, was construction project manager on Willis Bond’s recently completed One Market Lane in Wellington, which included the fitout for Trade Me’s head office. He’s since moved to Auckland to set up LT McGuinness’s office for projects in the Wynyard Quarter, where Willis Bond is marketing the Wynyard Central apartments.

Tuhoe Building a Multiple Winner for Project Manager & Architect

Jeff Vivian of Arrow International (now of Leigh Construction 2015 ) cleaned up with 3 awards at the NZ Institute of Building’s national awards held in Auckland last night for his work on Tuhoe’s Te Uru Taumatua at Taneatua. Mr Vivian, a project manager at Arrow for 7 years, won the excellence award in the $25-50 million category and, with Jasmax co-founder & project lead architect Ivan Mercep – who died just before the project was completed – won the institute’s innovation & Supreme awards. Mr Mercep’s son, broadcaster Simon Mercep, said this was his architect father’s last project “and a great one to finish with”, and went on to describe how they’d won the tender: “Most of the 45 tenders arrived with plans & designs. Ivan arrived with a piece of paper and a pencil and said, ‘What do you want?’”

The NZIOB differentiates by making its awards for individual performance rather than for the project, but this project has won multiple construction industry awards. At the Property Council awards in June it won best in category for both green Building & special purpose structures, but lost out to ASB North Wharf for the Supreme award. It was designed to the stringent criteria of the international Living Building Challenge (LBC), and the completed project is New Zealand’s most advanced sustainable building.

Williamson the Entertainer Also Slips in Some Construction Updates

Building & Construction Minister Maurice Williamson was introduced to his Institute of Building audience on Friday night as an entertainer.

An Australian at my awards dinner table was gobsmacked, then figured the description was apt as the minister rattled off a number of jokes he was not allowed to say any more. He thought Australia could do with a few cabinet ministers like that.
Although Mr Williamson‘s main role was to be photographed with award winners, he also managed to slip in a few points about the current state of the building industry, starting with the Christchurch earthquake experience: “Take the CCTV building – which should never have been built – out of the equation and our buildings stood up pretty well. We should celebrate our standard, but also take it up a bit.” And then there are changes to earthquake awareness, requirements for greater ability to withstand shakes, and a point that probably needs to be explained more widely: “The new building standard is different for every location in New Zealand – low versus high, Kaitaia minimal.”

Not so long ago, to be a builder, “All you needed was a couple of dogs & a ute. We also had the bizarre situation where builders spent weeks printing off plans for the council, who spent weeks doing the same thing, then starting work on them. The building industry has been paper-based, red-taped, and is changing to risk-based building consenting. The new consenting scheme has huge merits.”

Mr Williamson did something few do: he distinguished between house affordability – what a particular buyer can afford – and housing affordability – the general cost of construction, building materials & design.

This took him back to a starter-home design competition the Government ran in 2009, won by Stephen Smith of S3 Architects Ltd, Auckland. Housing NZ built the first of these houses on Preston Rd, Otara, in 2010. The competition was to design an affordable home with a habitable floor area no bigger than 120m² and costing no more than $1400/m² to build. Mr Williamson said the 3-bedroom home was built for $158,000. “It’s somewhere you’d be happy to live. After being a showhome, it sold for $400,000 because it’s not just the building, it’s the land.”

Mr Williamson said building retentions remained a difficult issue, as did the apparent cultural attachment to unique homes. After referring to a flight he made over a Californian suburb of 900 identical homes, Mr Williamson conceded there was a cultural difference: “We’re absolutely wedded to bespoke homes, but we may have to build a lot of homes that are similar – not tacky, but similar.”

The Institute of Building’s awards are individual, not for the building but for the work done, and the benchmark is set by the second-last winner of the night – the winner of the young achiever award. This year that award went to Andrew Rowden, of Hawkins Construction Ltd in Christchurch, a name you can expect to see again.

Setting the benchmark because, if the performance of past winners is anything to go by, these young achievers will appear on the awards list time & time again. Last year’s young achiever, Brendan Lindsey of Dominion Constructors Ltd in Auckland, won an excellence award this year for his work on Aecom House, in the $25-50 million category. The top award went to Fletcher Construction duo Jack Harris & Simon Chambers for their work on the earthquake-damaged Grand Chancellor Hotel in Christchurch.

Young Achiever Hit Building Sites at Age of 7 then Scaled Dubai Heights

The winner of the Institute of Building’s young achiever award, Brendan Lindsey, started going on site with his carpenter father at weekends & in school holidays when he was just 7. In contrast to that early experience, he’s also worked on some of the world’s biggest projects – as construction manager for Multiplex (UK) Ltd on White City, 199 Knightsbridge & West India Quay in London, and on the Royal Towers and the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Dubai. Before going overseas, Mr Lindsey worked for Multiplex in Auckland on the Metropolis & other projects. He returned to Auckland after nearly 7 years overseas to start work for Dominion Constructors.

The institute’s Supreme award went to Grant Thomas, who was project manager for Hawkins Construction Ltd on its Auckland Art Gallery redevelopment project. He’s also been a winner of the young achiever award, in 2006.

Their latest project was Hawkins’ design-build of Papamoa College, completed in time for the start of the 2011 school year, one of 3 recent Hawkins projects for the Ministry of Education and one of 4 projects for which Hawkins staff won excellence awards. Mr Overton & Mr Sofo won the sustainability award for the Papamoa School and other Hawkins staff won excellence awards for the Mission Heights schools stage 2, Waitomo Caves visitors centre and the East buildings at Britomart.

Graeme White (White Associates Ltd), in his final year of 4 as chairman of the judging panel, said: “Most awards are about product, these are about people. It is these people who have made the projects great.”

The Waitomo project leaders reckoned the new visitors’ centre took the cake for difficulty, while the Britomart team completed a 37-consent job on time, although the building was increased from a $110 million value to $155 million through variations, including changes at the top from residential to an extra office tenancy.

2 women featured twice each on the awards list. Hayley Tribble (Arrow International Ltd, Queenstown) was Highly Commended for her work on the local St John’s Church hall in the under-$5 million category and for the young achiever award.

Gemma Collins – dubbed “the green queen” at Fletcher Construction Co Ltd – won the excellence award for innovation and was Highly Commended in the young achiever category for her work on Ormiston Senior College, Flat Bush. The school sits under one roof around a north-facing courtyard and is New Zealand’s first school to win 5 green stars for design. Ms Collins introduced UK company Monodraught Ltd’s natural ventilation system in place of full air conditioning.

NZIOB Awards Demonstrate the Passion of an Industry

The New Zealand Institute of Building’s focus on discipline rather than occupation thrusts forward some passionate players in the world of property – people with a positive inclination toward innovation, keen to demonstrate their imagination.

This year’s winner of the institute’s young achiever & innovation awards, Ross Copland, carries on the tradition. As Mainzeal Property & Construction Ltd’s first sustainability manager, one of his projects has been to find ways to use recycled glass at Lion Nathan’s new Project Century brewery – the solution was to use crushed glass as an aggregate in concrete.He established Engineers Without Borders in New Zealand, told last night’s awards dinner that he hadn’t grown up wanting to become a construction engineer but, through his work on sustainability at Mainzeal, found it was fantastic.

A second recipient of a major award was Jack Smith, who’s had a lifetime passion for the construction industry through his 35-year career at the Fletcher Group and into his retirement. He was made an honorary member of the institute – a rare distinction as he joins the only other 2 holders of this award, Christchurch architect Sir Miles Warren and Auckland engineer Sir Ron Carter.

Mr Smith’s career included 6 years as general manager of Fletcher Construction & 15 years as managing director of Fletcher Holdings, until he retired in 1988. Fletcher Construction Ltd’s Penrose headquarters are named after him. He was a founding member of the NZ Institute of Building and is a fellow of the Institute of Professional Engineers.

The recipient of the NZIOB Medal, Gina Jones, headed the institute’s awards judging panel for 6 years. She’s a director of her own firm, Accent Architects Ltd, and is also an artist.

An award not announced at the awards ceremony went to Linda Kestle, who was made a fellow of the institute. She became president of the institute’s northern chapter in June, taking over from Martin Fahey, who was elected national president for a 2-year term.

Ms Kestle is a senior lecturer in construction at Unitec, runs her own company specialising in sustainable design & construction, Kestle Design Associates Ltd, and is also working on her PhD. She’s worked as an international consultant & researcher on environmental sensitive design, construction technology for hostile environments and design, construction & environmental strategies for projects in remote areas.

Charity Job Turns into Award Winner

Mainzeal’s contracts manager in Christchurch, Graeme Earl, found himself on both sides of the deal when he helped a charity turn a rundown 1930s villa into a modern surgery. His efforts saved the Canterbury Charity Trust Hospital more than $1 million and, on Friday night, saw him win double honours at the New Zealand Institute of Building’s Awards.

Mr Earl & his team won the award in the under $5 million category, then came through as Supreme Award winners. He became involved supporting the charity through his wife’s work, before also having a company involvement.

The winner of the young achiever’s award, Aaron Muir, scored his first job as project manager on a new high-rise building at the age of 28, 5 years after joining Fletcher Construction. It wasn’t an easy one, managing a staff of 20 and workforce of 350 around the clock, 7 days a week to build the 16 story Maritime Tower in Wellington.

The Institute of Builders’ awards differ from others in that the focus is on the individual (or teams) role, not how spectacular the building might look.

NZIOB Celebrates Awards Unique for Focus on People

The New Zealand Institute of Building’s awards “are unique in the industry in that they are attached to an individual or a team, not a building,” president John Bullen told members at the annual awards dinner.

The institute’s Supreme award went to Andrew Holmes, construction manager on Project Crioch, the prison at Milton, 50km south of Dunedin. Mr Holmes, employed by Hawkins Construction Ltd, has now moved to Queenstown to work on Melview Developments Ltd’s $1 billion Kawarau Falls Station resort development.

Institute foundation member Graeme Goss, of Christchurch, was awarded the NZIOB medal at the awards in Auckland last night.
Mr Goss runs his own architectural building & construction management company, Hindhope Developments Ltd, which specialises in the more challenging projects. He has worked on several large projects, including the hydro schemes and Think Big projects in the South Island.

At the institute, he’s been on the southern chapter board since the late 1980s, a national councilor since the early 1990s and is the national membership officer.

Institute of Builders Makes Special Award to Corps of Engineers

The NZ Institute of Building has established a president’s award, to be handed out every second year, and starting with an unusual one to the Corps of Royal NZ Engineers for its “Commitment to excellence and continuing achievements in the field of humanitarian & development construction, particularly recent efforts in East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan & the South-west Pacific”.

Work by the engineers included roads, bridges, schools and a maternity ward, but one of the recipients, Neville Mosely, said the highlight was not the projects but the everyday interaction with the local people.

Small Scott Base Project a Big Winner for Leighs

Anthony Leighs & Matt Searle went up to the stage to collect the first award at the NZ Institute of Building’s annual awards ceremony in Auckland last night. And they just kept coming back.All for some sheds at the South Pole which the evening’s MC, Brett Rutledge, jokingly referred to as looking like a bunch of Skyline garages.
It was a little more complicated than putting up a garage in the back yard. Everything was made in Christchurch and the whole construction checked there before being transported to the New Zealand Antarctic expedition’s home at Scott Base.

It was a zero-footprint exercise even the tiny white polystyrene packing balls were cleaned up every day and removed. And it was an exercise which didn’t allow for any mistakes in ordering up materials & equipment. Mr Searle & his crew of 9 went down to the snow for 3 months last summer, coming out only when they’d finished the job.

Leighs Construction Ltd has a fair local workload in Canterbury but also looks for different, challenging projects. For Mr Searle, out of town didn’t mean Timaru, it meant somewhere the cellphone was out of range. In this case he had to learn what to look for in a job interview where he was choosing a crew that had to work together 12 hours/day, live in 2 bunkrooms for a frozen summer and do most of their socialising together because their work schedule meant they needed to be a little isolated from the base’s 80 other residents. I asked him if the selection process & success of the job meant he’d come up with something akin to a Canterbury forward pack in commitment. He said he had 9 front-rowers. They were so committed they got the job done 22 days ahead of schedule, though they had to be careful how much they exerted themselves – in the heavy clothes they were obliged to wear, getting too strenuous could mean being bathed in frozen sweat.

The team built the Hillary Field Centre at Scott Base, and Mr Searle will return in January with a team of 4 to spend a month building a new laboratory.

Mr Leighs got his construction company going 10 years ago and in 2002 was named the NZIOB’s young achiever of the year. Returning with project manager Mr Searle this year, he began the night by collecting the award for projects under $5 million, sponsored by specialist recruitment company Hays Construction.

The duo went on to win the Placemakers innovation award and completed their evening by collecting the NZIOB Supreme award, sponsored by Gib & James Hardie.

As well as awards for excellence in the building professions, there was also an award for the convenor of judges for the young achiever award, John Bullen, of the Bledisloe Estate Trust, who received the NZIOB Medal for his services. He’s a fellow of the institute, has been a national councilor for 8 years, northern chapter president & awards organiser. “I got involved in the NZIOB many years ago to up-skill a little bit,” he said.

Fletcher Hospital Team Wins Top NZIOB Award

The 2 project chiefs for Fletcher Construction Ltd’s Auckland City Hospital development won the NZ Institute of Building’s Supreme award at a function in Auckland last night

That award, and the trophy for projects over $10 million, were accepted by Warren Hollings & Waren Warfield. Mr Hollings also headed construction of the SkyCity project. among his comments on the awards: “This was one mother of a job -it was as tough as the casino.”

The institute’s Young Achiever award was split between Richard McGowan, of Warren & Mahoney, and Stuart Smith, of Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd. Most of the awards were for public sector projects. One that didn’t fit that description and missed out on awards in 2 categories was the Foxton windmill, which took 13 years from original conception in 1990 to completion in 2003. Jan Langen & Cor Slobbe, 2 Dutch immigrants of the 1950s, were finalists in the under-$2 million category and for the innovation award.
